Russell was born in Aberdeen some considerable time ago but moved to Ellon in 1976.

Russell has an eclectic taste in music (and unusual words) ranging from classical through jazz, blues, country and pop. However, at Fyvie Folk Club, he is most likely to be heard singing songs from the north east of Scotland in the local Doric dialect. He enjoys performing bothy ballads, "muckle" ballads" and songs from the music hall tradition.

Russell receives many requests from Club members not to sing Utterly Butterly, a self-penned homage to the rowie (a gastronomic delicacy from Aberdeen).
